Ginger Snaps

This handed-down recipe from my Grandma brings back great memories.


3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2-3/4 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
Sugar* for rolling


  1. Mix shortening, sugar, egg, and molasses together; beat well.
  2. Sift together dry ingredients; add to first mixture.
  3. Chill.
  4. Preheat oven to 350˚F.
  5. Form dough into 1″ balls, then roll in sugar*.
  6. Bake for 10-12 min. Cool on cookie sheet for 2 min.
