Wisconsin Brandy Old Fashioned

I’ve lived in Wisconsin nearly my entire life, yet only recently started enjoying this classic Wisconsin cocktail. I’m sure there’s plenty of slight variations, but this is the one I enjoy. You won’t find a supper club anywhere in the state that doesn’t serve this cocktail!

ingredients

1/2 tsp sugar
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 orange slice (plus extra for garnish)
2 Maraschino cherries or brandied cherries (plus extra for garnish)
2 oz brandy
7-up, sour mix, or seltzer 

instructions

1. Place the sugar, bitters, orange slice, and cherries in an Old Fashioned glass. Add a splash of water. Muddle, being careful to avoid the orange rind, until the sugar has dissolved.
2. Add the brandy and a couple of ice cubes. Stir.
3. Top the drink off with your choice of soda, sour mix, or seltzer.
4. Garnish with a skewered orange slice and cherry, if desired.
