Pasta Meat Sauce

A hearty pasta sauce with just enough depth of flavor.


1/2 lb sweet Italian sausage
1/2 lb lean ground chuck
1 medium onion, minced
3 cloves garlic, crushed
28 oz. can crushed San Marzano tomatoes
12 oz tomato paste
13 oz tomato sauce
1/4 cup red wine
2 Tbsp sugar
8 fresh basil leaves
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1 bay leaf


In a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat, cook the sausage, beef, onion and garlic until browned.  Drain fat. 

Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water/wine.  Mix in sugar and add seasonings. 

Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 1 1/2 hrs., stirring occasionally.  Add more water/wine if seems too tomato-y.
